On 3 September, the largest gallery on Crete opens its doors with a big celebration at 19:30 in the town hall in Paleochora. 40 artists from all over the world, including Gerhard Stelzhammer, will come and exhibit their works in 24 so-called Art Points until 18 September. These are bars, cafés, tavernas, hotels and various beaches in Paleochora.

The first Paleochora Art Week was planned four years ago for one week. Hence the name „Art Week“. But then many people came and wanted to see the Art Week even longer because they hadn’t seen all the paintings, photographs and sculptures. Art Week now lasts 16 days and there are several attractions.

By far the biggest attraction is the underwater exhibition at Methexis Beach. For the second time, visitors will have to put on their snorkelling goggles to see photographs, paintings and sculptures by 14 artists underwater. This year, too, there will be some things that are not expected underwater. If you can’t believe it, you should watch the film about the underwater exhibition from 2015 on YouTube. And for people who don’t like snorkelling or want to get a taste of it first, there will once again be an underwater film in the Townhall.

All 40 artists will be exhibiting at least one work in an overview exhibition in the town hall. This is open every day from 7pm to 11.30pm and on Sunday from 11am to 1pm. The art can also be viewed during the day in Art Points, i.e. in cafés, bars, taverns or hotels.

There will also be a raffle again this year. Anyone who buys a ticket for 2 euros can win a work of art donated by the participating artists for Art Week. The draw will take place at the finissage on 18 September.

The Paleochora Art Week offers a colourful programme: Underwater Music, Art for Kids, Artist at Work and Art Walks. Anyone who would like to talk to artists should look out for one of the Artist at Work events in the programme. Here, visitors can find out how artists work and what materials or techniques they use. Gerhard will be at a new sculpture on Stony Boulevard.

Visitors who want to find out more about the artists and Art Week should not miss the guided Art Walks, which are offered in various languages for a fee.

Those who want to shake a leg can do so at the Art Week Party (7 Sept.), the Dance Marathon (10 Sept.) or at a creative dance workshop (10 Sept.). And those who prefer a quieter pace can watch the Butoh dance on 17 September.

Paleochora Art Week is a non-profit organisation run by a number of artists. It aims to bring art to the people and is funded by the artists and local sponsors.
