In autumn 2019, Paleochora Art Week was honoured for its work by the Tourism Association of the Municipality of Kandanos/Paleochora on World Tourism Day. This was a special honour. The certificate was presented to Gerhard Stelzhammer and Conni Lins by Stelios Kalogridis on 27 September. The two accepted the award on behalf of Paleochora Art Week.
Paleochora Art Week is a very special exhibition format that took place for the fifth time in 2019. It is more than just a normal exhibition, as artists are not only present at the opening, but for the entire duration of the Art Week, allowing visitors to talk to them and ask about the background to the works or find out something about the artist. There is a lot of talking, laughing and drinking olive leaf lemonade, wine or water together. This year there was also a good programme of live music. In addition to many travellers, the locals are also very taken with this form of exhibition. The children look forward to this event long beforehand, as they are also allowed to be creative and, for example, touch the sculptures. This also makes the grown-ups happy, as it is often forbidden to touch sculptures in museums and exhibitions. But the smooth and supple surfaces of marble or wood in particular invite visitors to experience the works with their senses.
This year, adults were also able to become artistically active and paint a picture together with Claudia Boldura in the Art Flow Gallery.
It is also a special time for the artists, as they can meet like-minded people and exchange ideas about their work, production techniques and stories. Sometimes they also learn about strokes of fate that have led to a work. Art Week is also a place where new projects are discussed.
The Artist Dinner, which always takes place at the beginning of Art Week, is always a great reunion and a good opportunity for newcomers to get to know everyone. Pizzeria Portofino has been providing delicious food and a cosy atmosphere for years.
And that brings us to the financial side of things. Paleochora Art Week is a non-profit organisation and can only take place thanks to the support of local sponsors. In 2019, we organised Art Week for the first time in June. That was still at the beginning of the season and many other organisers were asking local businesses for money. But Art Week has again found many sponsors and even a major sponsor to make Art Week possible.
So we can say: Paleochora loves the Art Week! Ευχαριστούμε!!!
The special thing about Paleochora Art Week is also the organising team who have put a lot of time, energy, brain power and work into this exhibition. From renovating the old police station, to creating a music programme, the PR materials, and the many small tasks of setting up and dismantling, it all takes many hands.
An exhibition without plastic cups and bottles was just one of many good ideas implemented by the organisation team.
We would also like to thank Wieland, who made the old police station available to Art Week before moving into this old, historic and beautiful building himself.
We are still looking for a nice big exhibition venue for the next Art Week. There should be space for at least 30 artists to present their artworks. There needs to be enough space for sculptures, hands-on activities for our “Art for Kids” and “Artist at Work” formats and, of course, for live music.
We dream of a beautiful space in the centre of Paleochora where visitors can just drop by to celebrate art!
